Join us for a webinar conversation with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee about the SCOTUS decision in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson upholding a city ordinance that effectively makes it a crime to be homeless.
On April 22, 2024, WLC Board member Kelsi Corkran, Supreme Court Director, Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection, argued in the United States Supreme Court on behalf of Gloria Johnson, an unhoused person, and others living and facing homelessness in Grants Pass, Oregon. Kelsi argued that the City’s effort to prohibit sleeping outside criminalized homelessness and violated the Eighth Amendment’s protection against cruel and unusual punishment.
In the wake of the Court’s June 28th decision, Kelsi and WLC Legal Director Ryan Downer will have a conversation about this case and its implications for civil rights law, on July 10th at 1 pm ET. During the virtual event, participants will have the opportunity to submit questions about the Supreme Court’s first opinion in the current calendar year.
