At Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs (“WLC”) we stand ready to face the future—no matter what it holds.
This is not new for us. We’ve been here before.
The National Battlefield for Racial Justice Lies in Washington, D.C.
Formed in 1968 in the wake of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—WLC has been on the frontlines of the nation’s racial justice battles for over 56 years. Situated in the Nation’s Capital, we have litigated and won civil rights victories that have advanced immigrant justice, education equity, disability rights, fair housing, workers’ rights, and criminal legal system reform.
More recently, during the first Trump presidency, WLC—along with our pro bono partners—went to court on behalf of Dreamers, immigrants, immigrant community organizations, Black churches, and Black Lives Matter protesters:
- Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”): On behalf of 16 Dreamers and nine immigrants’ rights organizations, we sued the Trump administration (2017) for rescinding DACA, and won a favorable decision at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit holding that the rescission of DACA was arbitrary and capricious and that DACA should continue
- Temporary Protected Status (“TPS”): On behalf of Salvadoran immigrants and CASA de Maryland, we sued the Trump administration for terminating TPS for nationals of El Salvador (2018)
- Black Lives Matter (“BLM”): On behalf of Black Lives Matter D.C. and 13 individual protesters, we sued federal law enforcement agencies (2020) for using tear gas and other military-grade weapons against peaceful demonstrators protesting the killing of George Floyd and other police killings
- Proud Boys: On behalf of Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, we sued the Proud Boys and obtained a landmark court decision holding that the governing body of the Proud Boys must pay over $1 million in damages for their roles in violent attacks on the church and the destruction of the church’s BLM sign. The $1 million award is the fourth-highest amount ever awarded against white supremacists.
We are ready for 2025. We have the litigators, the experts, the experience, and the drive.
Join us in this imperative fight for justice. We are committed to using every legal tool to halt any policy or practice that imperils our communities, our Capital, and our country.
Together, we will rise to meet the challenges of this moment.
Support us, here.
