Today, prisoners across the country are striking to bring attention to the abuses that they experience. These men and woman are demanding reforms that recognize their dignity, including humane living conditions, payment of fair wages, education and rehabilitation and the right to have their voices meaningfully heard at the ballot box and in the courts. The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights & Urban Affairs supports the courageous efforts of prisoners across the country who are peacefully participating in Prison Strike 2018. We urge prison officials and policymakers to listen to these demands and to respect the rights of prisoners to demonstrate and restrain from violent of forceful measures to suppress prisoners’ speech.
